In 2024, Boston Area Gleaners moved more produce than ever in its 20 year history. This included 700k lbs of farm donations that were gleaned and/or packed out. In this talk, we will focus on organizational decisions, processes, and techniques that contributed to the year’s success.
Hailing from rural PA, Deb Hicks first started farming after her freshman year at Dickinson College. After some years (and some olive harvests!) abroad, she found her way back to working with food full-time. Before joining Boston Area Gleaners, Deb spent 3 years working for the food rescue, Lovin’ Spoonfuls (now Spoonfuls), where she built connections with dozens of hunger relief organizations in and around the Boston area. Deb has been with Boston Area Gleaners for 4 seasons, and enjoys working closely with seasonal apprentices, hundreds of dedicated volunteers, and the farming community!
